Once upon a time, there was ONE week per year that I would take the time to read a book. One week, that is all. I loved this time of the year. Mom and I would sit on the deck overlooking with the lake in front of us, feet on the railing, wind brushing against our skin, the warmth of the sun beating down on us, this was luxury to us. This was the best time of the year, this was my reset button. No this was not in January, it was in August.
This week in August was set aside for us to disconnect from the world around; shutting off cell phones, no internet, no cable, and no television. It was during this week I would read one maybe two books (for the year), but other than that I was not a reader.
Now… fast forward 3 years, I have a new addiction for books. Submerged in a community where learning never stops, I developed a craving to continue growing as a professional. I started with a few recommendations from co-workers and started on my journey. During the summer months, I would read during my lunch hour on the balcony and since the season has changed a little here in Fargo, I currently I have been reading on my couch with a weighted blanket on my lap.
Since June of 2019, I have started several books and grown as an individual. I stared working through workbooks that have helped define my journey, helping highlight what I needed to focus on now and what I could save for another day.
Here are some of the books/workbooks I have read and/or are currently working through:
Books:
- Leaders Eat Last by Simon Sinek
- High Performance Habits: How Extraordinary People Become That Way by Brendon Burchard
- When Brains Collide by Michael D. Lewis (more of a medical/nutrition book, but good for those interested)
- Dare to Lead by Brene Brown (all her books are amazing)
*I used to think it was a sin to highlight and write in books, but I have convinced myself it is okay (as long as it is your book). So feel free to highlight your favorite parts or even write them in journal for a quick reference.
Workbooks (these are meant to be written in, so breaks the rules and mark them up!):
- This Year I will: a 52 Week Guided Journal to Achieve Your Goals by Tiffany Louise
- 52 Lists for Happiness by Moorea Seal
- The Self-Confidence Workbook: A Guide to Overcoming Self-Doubt and Improving Self-Esteem by Barbara Markway (I didn’t realize how helpful this book was until I started working through it!)
- The High Performance Planner by Brendon Burchard
Since I have taken a few moments out of my day to have some “me time”I feel like I have been able to be a better mentor, follower, and leader. I challenge you to carve out some “me time”during your crazy lives and see what happens.
P.S. If you have any good books you enjoy reading or would like to share, I am all ears (or eyes)! Love suggestions!
XO,
Sami
